In the first Chapter of Algorithms of Oppression, it talks about the different ways search engines reinforce racism. There are examples of the search, "Black girls" and the results that come back are not okay. They bring up porn sites, graphic images and just examples of dehumanizing results. It then goes on to give images of these results as well as other search results of "beautiful", "ugly", "professor", and other examples. Its crazy to see what results appear and show how the algorithms are not created equally.
More into the chapter more we see Noble discussing the power of search results. This is something I hold personal because Noble talks about how many people think search results are true. I use to think this way and always looked at the first pages of google. I then found out that many are paid ads and boosted to the top by searching algorithms with the right keywords. Noble points out most of the issues with searches in the middle of the chapter. She believes that there is so much wrong in searches on google and others.
Towards the end of the chapter Noble brings it all together and tries to push for a change. She talks about challenging gender and race issues on the web and the the narrative they provide. As well as pushing the issues with Cybertopia. How the cyberspace inst as safe and fair to all of its user. Many people now can voice their opinion online somewhere and create a change.
